Bargain Day at the Grocery Store
Today I needed some items from the store that I just could not wait until Wednesday to buy.
Wednesday is when I get my check and I can do some shopping but I was out of a couple of essentials that I really needed today.
I had been lucky today and sold something on EBay so I had fifteen dollars to spend. I needed Kitty Litter and Wyler's Drink Mix. I was out of something to drink and the cats were out of kitty litter. It goes without saying these were two items that could not wait until later this week.
I only get the best kitty litter so I was off to Price Chopper to buy it and then to the dollar store to get the drink mix. It shows you who rates the highest in this household doesn't it?
The kitty litter was six dollars leaving me another nine dollars of expendable income.
Once I knew what the kitty litter would cost me I was able to take a moment to look at the discount baskets at the front of the store. I lucked out. They had two containers of one pound Folgers coffee marked down to two dollars and fifty cents each and a large box of Bisquick for two dollars. Nothing was out of date they were just a little crushed. I can live with that for a savings like this.
Needless to say they went right into my cart.
Then I heard an announcement over the intercom system. They were giving away a free paring knife the kind on the info commercials in the back of the store. Naturally it was a no brainer I went to check it out. They were of course doing a promotion and I had to listen to five minutes of someone trying to sell a set of knives. A lot of people walked away. I didn't. It was a nice knife and five minutes out of my shopping time would not matter one way or another. When the man was done I would have been tempted if I had the money to spend because it was a nice offer but then again I try to buy nothing until I have tried the product out first.
At the end of the promotion half of the people bought the knives and half did not. I was in the half that did not.
What I received for waiting was a twenty five dollar paring knife from Ever Sharp.
I had spent eleven dollars at Price Chopper and saved thirty four dollars. Next I headed to the dollar store to get my lemonade mix and spent a dollar of course and went home with three dollars in my pocket. That to me was a successful shopping trip!
So next time you are in a more expensive grocery store do more than shop the sales in the flyer leave just a few dollars for surprise mark downs and special offers.
Bottom line is I love to save money don't you?
