Jumpin Jacks

Jumpin Jacks

Yesterday after attending an Opera with a friend we decided to stop and get a hot dog at a famous charbroil located in Scotia NY. Neither of us had been there this year since they reopened after the hurricane last year had seriously damaged the business. We wanted to see what had been done to bring this place back to life and for them to be able to open again this year.
We were so pleased to see things had not changed. There were many things replaced of course but at the same time it was still as we remembered it. We bought our hot dogs and took a seat at a picnic table to enjoy our food and the ambiance of the place. It was not long needless to say before my mind wandered and I started dreaming about warm summer days and places that use to be around back in the past when I was young where we all could enjoy in the summer on a teenagers budget. Now long gone I had to ask myself where did all these places go? Where are all the char broils and hot dog stands? Where are the free picnic areas along the water’s edge scattered and there for anyone to enjoy.
Where are those things we enjoyed that cost so little or were free? Are there any of these places in existence anymore?
I am happy to be able to yes there are still some out there and we are lucky in the Schenectady NY area in the village of Scotia such a place still exists.
It is a place with a long 60 year history with our community called Jumpin Jacks that still sells all  the long time favorites but keeps a foot in the present by using Trans fat free shorting to cook and fry with giving a nod to what is in the best interest of their customers.
Jumpin Jacks cooks all their temping treats as they did when they started in business in 1952 and was an ice cream stand called Tasty Freeze and then in 1957 they opened a small charbroil called the charcoal pit that eventually grew and became the place we now know as Jumpin Jacks.
After 24 wonderful years the original Jack of Jumpin Jacks Jack Brennan sold the business to Mark Lansing.
Last year during the floods that were brought on by Hurricane   Irene Jumpin Jacks was almost destroyed when it was flooded and almost disappeared under the water from the Mohawk River.
Everyone wondered if this part of our history could ever recover from such a disaster but Jumpin Jacks was able to do just that with the support and fortitude of the owners and people in the community who refused to let this wonderful establishment become a thing of the past and just another memory of something good that no longer exited.  Jumpin Jacks is back and better than ever.
We found during our visit this week that the food was as good as ever and the ambiance was the same. Yes there some new tables and new parts to the buildings and equipment replaced that were destroyed during the floods but it was still Jumpin Jacks just as I always knew it.
Sitting at the table eating my hot dog loaded with all the condiments Jumpin Jacks puts out for the enjoyment of their customers I could not help remembering other days and other years spent visiting Jumpin Jacks. Days when I first moved here from Rochester and longed for something familiar that would make me feel at home and when I discovered Jumpin Jacks I had that familiar feeling that I so longed for and other days in the past when my mom was alive and how much she enjoyed her visits there as well as how she craved their one and only piccalilli sauce. She just could not get enough!
Yes it is the memories the food and the history that makes this little charbroil place so important and what makes it a place that is permanently affixed in our hearts.
Jumpin Jacks is more than just a place to eat it also sponsors’ a modified race car and water ski shows best of band shows and fireworks.
We all benefit from these extras in this area so if someone ask me if I would recommend Jumpin Jacks?
I would say of course I do and this summer I will be thinking of all of you as I sit and eat my hot dog and watch the band or the water show or perhaps on a nice summer day enjoy a picnic at one of the picnic table along the Mohawk. Better yet why not join me this summer and enjoy all the fun yourself!

Here is a recent report by Liz Bishop from Channel 6 news

Jumpin' Jacks Opens For The Season Today
SCOTIA -- It may not feel like summer today, but today's opening of a popular Scotia drive-in is a sure sign that warm temperatures aren't far away.  Today, Jumpin' Jacks in Scotia will open its doors for the season.  The local hotspot has been a summer staple for over six decades, serving up burgers, French fries and shakes to huge crowds every year.   You never would have guessed that just over 7 months ago the famous drive-in was underwater after Irene forced the outdoor restaurant to close early in 2011.  Flood waters from the Mohawk River nearly swallowed up Jumpin' Jacks. Liz Bishop toured the restaurant with owner Mark Lansing earlier this month.   He said that it was an awful feeling to know that Irene was coming, but not having anything that they could do about it.  Lansing estimates the damage at more than $200,000.  He's had flood insurance for more than 30 years, and 2011 was just the second time that he had to collect.  But Jumpin' Jack's is ready to open today with new coolers, ice cream machines and soda dispensers
