Stuffed Pinwheel Steaks on a Budget!
Today I was reading the grocery ad for Gabriel’s grocery store and though that the pinwheel steaks they were advertising sounded good. Then I noticed the price. It was $4.99 a pound!
That is way out of my budget. I would not be discouraged by this. I figured if I went over to Gabriel’s and looked at the steaks and asked the butcher what was in them I could make it myself so I did just that.
What Gabriel’s sells as pinwheel steak is what Cooks.com calls stuffed steak. All it is steak with stuffing. Now that I could handle!
So I came back home verified what I needed by going on the website cooks.com. When I was confident that I knew what to do I took some cube steak out of the freezer to defrost and a box of stuffing mix from my pantry.
Once the steak was defrosted I made the stuffing mix in the microwave. Then I flattened the cube steak a little to make it easier to handle and roll. Next I spread the stuffing on the steak to within a quarter of an inch from the edge. Once it was rolled I put I two toothpicks in the edge to hold it closed and cut each steak in half. When I was done I had four stuffed pinwheel steaks.
I put two steak pinwheels away in the freezer and browned the other two. I did not cook them thru I only browned the four sides to create a base for my rue and a nice browned coloring on the steaks.
Once they were browned I removed the steaks from the frying pan and made rue with butter flour and a little bit of onion soup mix for flavoring. Once the thicker was ready I added water and made gravy.
When the gravy was ready I put the pinwheel steaks back in the frying pan and covered it and let the pinwheel steaks cook in the gravy until they were done. The sides I chose for this meal were some peas and mashed potatoes but it’s up to you what sides you pick. This is about you not merits your meal not mine.
This turned out to be a wonderful meal and I was able to keep it in my budget!
Give it a try I think you will like this different way of making steak because it turned out wonderfully was easy to make it tasted great!
I don’t believe you need to spend a lot of money if you’re willing to think outside the box and investigate what you think you might like to try and of course as always I do enjoy eating well on a budget!
