Superburger Bowl For Super Bowl Sunday

Superburger Bowl For Super Bowl Sunday

Tomorrow is one of the biggest days of the year for football.
It is the one and only Super Bowl Sunday!
It is also one of the hardest days to plan a meal for everyone who comes to enjoy the day with you.
What makes it hard is no one wants to sit at a table while the game is on and the game lasts so long its way past dinner time when it is over.
So what to do? What do you feed your guests that will work while they are sitting in front of the TV? It’s easy if it’s just snacks.
But a good hostess or host will want to give their guests something more substantial than snacks that will taste good and fill them up like a main course would so you don’t send anyone home hungry.
My mom who was not a cook found a recipe in one of the women’s magazines back in the fifties.  It was simple enough for her to make and it was an easy meal to serve in front of the TV that would not cause a big mess.
Today sixty years later I am still serving this same meal on Super Bowl Sunday and many other days during the year.
The only difference between what my mom made and what I make (I still do the original recipe from time to time) is the roll and the cheese.
The original recipe called for hot dog rolls and American Cheese.  If you choose this way of making this meal it is just as good as what I am going to tell you I do for this special day.
The only reason I changed up this recipe is I don’t like the fact that hot dog rolls are open ended and it is easy for the filling to fall out with an enthusiastic group of football lovers.
I make what I call superburger bowls.
I think you will love how easy and how tasty this meal will be.
Here is the recipe:
1 pound of ground beef (I like to add some Italian sausage but that’s up to you)
I can of Campbell's Minestrone soup (take off the extra liquid)
1 small can of crushed tomatoes
1 package of hard rolls. (do not use baking powder biscuitsor biscuits at all. They break apart far to easily)
Mozzarella cheese
Salt and pepper to taste (if you add Italian Sausage add a little Italian seasoning)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees
If you need double the amount of superburger bowls then add a another can of soup. I tried that today and it worked beautifully.
I did not need to add more liquid so I drained the liquid from the soup before I added it to the pan.
When the mixture was done it made up sixteen superburger bowls.
So all you have to add to the shopping list for your larger party is another can of soup and another package of rolls.

Brown the meat then add the soup and crushed tomatoes. Mix together and let cook on top of the stove in the frying pan for a few minutes to let the flavors meld together.

While the filling for this meal is cooking on the stove take out a package of hard rolls. You will need about six to eight rolls.
Slice top off of the roll .
Using a small knife, run the blade on the outer edge of the roll careful not to pierce the crust. With fingers remove the inside bread of the roll.
Removing the  center of each roll will form a bowl to hold the filling.

Once this is done scoop some of the filling into each bread bowl and press down the filling to compact then top with mozzarella cheese.

Place the now filled superburger bowls on a cookie sheet and place in the oven for thirty minutes.

Take out of the oven and let sit for at least ten minutes. The reason for this is to let the filling settle (just like what you do with Lasagna) Then they are ready to serve.
The total for eight superbuger bowls is six dollars for sixteen  bowls it is eight dollars.
There is real value in this  budget saving meal.
Besides being budget friendly it is also nice that  your superburger is contained on all sides and is less likely to make a mess.
I have never had anyone who has not enjoyed this meal on this or any other day I make it for them.
The nice thing about these superburger bowls is that they are  just as good the next day to enjoy if there are any left over after the Super Bowl party.
The next day I heat up my leftover superburger bowl and serve with a side of  cottage cheese with onions  and maybe string beans.
I hope you choose to give this recipe a try for your Super Bowl Sunday guests I know they  enjoy it .
But no matter what  you choose to make for this special day I hope you have fun!
Happy Super Bowl Sunday!
