Fond memories
of Hamburgers With Vinegar Sauce
I was making hamburgers on the grill the other day when my neighbor and
I started talking about how we had liked
to eat hamburgers when we were kids.
That brought to mind a special time in my life when I was a child. We
had just moved from Stanley St where I had lived right across the street from my
best friend. We had moved to a different street but it was only the next street
over but as a child I was devastated I felt could not just run across the
street to see her and her family any longer. That was not true of course. Lois
and her family loved us and we were welcome any time but you know how kids
think and at that moment in time I was a very sad little girl about the move.
It turned out that our landlord who was our downstairs neighbor was a
lovely old world Italian Lady named Carrie Laviola.
I don’t remember a lot of names from that time in my life but I will
never forget her and how loving she was.
She took my brother and me under her protective wing and every day when
we came home from school she would make us what she would call a snack. It was
really dinner. She knew mom did not cook and she wanted us to have a nourishing
meal. It made her feel better to know she had fed us a good hot meal and who
were we to argue? We loved her cooking and her mothering was a plus as well.
Mom of course always fed us after all she was a good mom who had a handicap
called the kitchen. Cooking was nowhere in her DNA so we really didn’t expect
her to cook. She did learn to make a couple things later on but at that point
in our lives we considered a mustard and butter sandwich dinner.
One of the things Carrie made us and we loved was called Hamburger with vinegar.
Now don’t turn up your nose its delicious and I found out how to make it
the other day after telling my neighbor the story.
It turned out wonderful and loaded with great flavor.
Here is how it’s made at least my version of this dish:
Vinegar Onion
Hamburger Patties
Ingredients:
½ lb ground beef
(makes about two patties)
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic (I used the already chopped I got at the dollar store)
½ envelope Lipton Onion Soup Mix (once again the dollar store version)
Directions:
1
Mix everything together but the hamburger
2
Make hamburger into two or three
patties, placing each one on a sheet of wax paper and lightly base with mixture.
then lightly base the hamburger to marinate.
3
Let it sit in fridge for 1 hour.
4
Prior to cooking, use 2 - 3 dashes on
Worcestershire sauce on one side of each patty. Make sure there is a light
layer of sauce all over on the face-up side of the patty. Place that side of
patty on grill/griddle first. Once that side is browned, flip and brown other
side.
4
Add cheese, if desired.
Now that I have recalled these hamburgers
you can bet I will make them often.
They taste wonderful and the vinegar
does not make them bitter they only add flavor.
I think you will enjoy these burgers as well so please give them a
chance. I believe you will be happy you did.
