Two More Items For Your Summer Survival Kit
Today is rainy and cool but don’t fool yourself summer is here and so is warm and hot weather.
I may be making pasta for dinner tonight but by next week the weather is suppose to be getting hot and I will be glad to have my food survival kit on hand.
Today I will add two products to put in your summer survival kit. The first is a given instant mash potatoes. Now, now don’t groan some of the instant potatoes are actually good. I found that the Idaho brand sold at the Dollar Tree is very good and surprisingly tasty. I bought the sour cream and garlic flavored instant potatoes and I do love them and they are a great value. You get two packages a box and there are enough potatoes in each pouch for three meals.
That leads me to the second item real bacon bits which I added to the potatoes.
I had never bought bacon bits before but saw them on the shelf at the Dollar General and decided to give them a try on impulse. They are in a four point five ounce bag, but you can get a larger size. I bought the Oscar Myer brand bacon bits and it cost two dollars. I know it sounds expensive but it’s not. These bacon bits go further than you can imagine.
When I got to the check out the lady that waited on me said oh I buy these all the time and I love them! I asked her what she put the bacon bits in besides a salad. She said she used them in potatoes especially potatoes with sour cream and garlic and they are delicious and then she said when I want to make a BLT I no longer have to fry up bacon. I sprinkle the bacon bits on the mayo and make the sandwich that way now.
I left the store with new ideas but the idea of using packaged bacon on a BLT that I was not that confident it would work.
That night I used the bacon on a summer salad and they tasted great. The next day was ninety five degrees and needless to say I did not want to cook. That was when I recalled the cashier telling me she used the bacon bits to make a BLT. Ok I thought to myself what do I have to lose? First I tasted the bacon bits straight out of the package and yes they taste just like freshly crumbled bacon. Ok now the courage built up I made my instant BLT.
It did not taste like I took a short cut and compromised on my sandwich. No it tasted like the real thing and I totally love it!
I won’t lie to you there are additives in this product but the up side is that it is low in calories, only twenty five calories a serving. The sandwich I made added up to two hundred calories and tasted like the thousand calorie sandwich I was carving. They really do taste like real bacon and it will not be a disappointment to you.
I will continue to look for better pricing and less additives but I will be buying the larger size container of bacon bits when I go grocery shopping again next month.
Now we have three things in our summer survival kit and there will be more.
I hope you will enjoy the ones I have suggested and will look forward to the others I have found.
We will keep it real and on budget.
That is something you can depend on my doing for you and for me every time.
