Easy & Fast Onion & Cheese Supper Bread

Easy & Fast Onion & Cheese Supper Bread

Last week I told you I found a folder when I was cleaning out my file of a lot of old recipes that I have not seen in years.
In that folder was a Bisquick book from 1959. I am not sure how it got there since I would not have been old enough to collect or send for this book when it was published.
It made me think did mom really consider cooking? No not possible! In all the years growing up I did most of the cooking mom had three things she actually cooked. SOS, Lasagna, and Super Burgers. All were great but that was the extent of her cooking experiences.
I looked though this book and found some great recipes that I wanted to try and one in particular I wanted to try right away called Onion and Cheese Supper Bread. It just sounded so good and I missed having a good bread or roll loaded with onions.
For years I had bought Price Chopper filled onion rolls. They were really good but then they changed the recipe and stopped adding the onions on the inside of the rolls and I stopped buying them.
Since I stopped buying the rolls I  have craved a good onion filled roll or bread and when I saw this recipe I could not help but want to make it.
Today I made the bread using as an excuse that I was making my meatloaf and wanted something different instead of a roll and this would be it. The  truth is I just wanted to try the bread.
Right now it’s baking in the oven and smells great. If you like the smell of cooking onions you will love the scent of this bread baking in the oven!
Here is the recipe for the bread in case you would like to give it a try:
Onion & Cheese Supper Bread
½ onion
Butter to cook onions in ( use butter it makes a difference in the taste of the bread when it’s baked)
1 egg slightly beaten
½ cup of milk
1 cup of sharp cheese
1 tbsp of poppy seeds
2 tbsp of butter

Directions
Heat oven to 400 degrees
Sauté onions until golden
Mix egg, milk
Blend in Bisquick
Add onions
Add cheese
Mix together
And put in round pie plate
Top with poppy seeds
Sprinkle melted butter over top
Bake for 20 to 30 minutes

I followed the instructions but did change it up a bit to suit me.
Instead of a half an onion I chopped up and add one whole medium size onion.
I didn’t have sharp cheese so I took cheddar cheese that I did have on hand and used that instead.
The final substitution was instead of poppy seeds I used sesame seeds. I always have sesame seeds on hand since it’s a favorite of mine when I do make bread products.
I baked my bread                in a convection oven and it was done in 18 minutes.
After I took the bread out of the oven I cut myself a piece and took a photograph of it.
Then I sat down with a fresh cup of coffee and gave it a try.
I love this bread! I am glad I added the extra onion. I think it needed it and the cheese was still favorable without being over bearing and the sesame seeds were fine.
So as I always say if you don’t have everything you need on hand find something you can use instead by thinking outside the box.
I believe this bread will be a favorite of mine because it’s fast, easy, and so good.
From time of assemble, cleanup, baking and eating the bread it was an half an hour.
Not bad, not bad at all.
If you like onions and cheese not to mention a biscuit or bread with dinner give this a try I think you may like it as much as I do.
You will not find this recipe on line or even on the Bisquick site. It’s too far back in years.
But sometimes what is good back when is still good today like this bread for an example
Enjoy!
