Monte Cristo Sandwich

Monte Cristo Sandwich

Years ago when I was a little girl my great aunt liked to treat us to dinner at the Crescent Beach Hotel in Greece, NY.
I was more fascinated with the place than I was with the food but that’s normal for a child I guess especially when there are things there that catch and hold your attention.
It was a pretty place and located right on the lake, but that’s not what fascinated me. No, it was all the shelves around the walls up toward the ceiling holding the first animated dolls I had ever seen. Each doll was about two feet tall and was in constant motion.
Years later we all saw these dolls show up in stores like Wal-Mart but for many years the only place I saw these dolls was Crescent Beach.
I loved watching all these dolls constantly moving and there were so many to watch and enjoy!
I did liked the food at Crescent Beach as well and enjoyed many first tries there such as the  a Monte Cristo Sandwich. I had never before seen a sandwich made with French toast and filled with my favorite cheese and cold cuts. How could you go wrong?
Years later I understand that Crescent Beach has fallen on hard times it’s a shame and I hope they get back on their feet soon.
That does not diminish how good the Monte Cristo Sandwich is or much I enjoy eating it.

I will give you the recipe for the orginal Monte Cristo served at the Brown Derby back in 1949 because this is how I recall the Monte Cristo being made at the Cresent Beach Hotel.

Monte Cristo

1  egg
 1/8 cup milk
Salt & freshly ground black pepper
 2 tablespoons butter, softened
2 pieces thinly sliced white bread
 1 thin slice cooked turkey
1 thin slice cooked ham
1 thin slice
Swiss cheese confectioners' sugar, for dusting
 Red currant jelly, for dipping

Directions

1. Lightly beat egg and milk in a shallow bowl. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.
2. For each sandwich, lightly butter 2 slices of bread on both sides.
3. Place turkey and ham between the 2 slices of bread.
4. Top with slice of cheese
5. Trim crusts, secure with toothpicks, and cut in half on the diagonal.
6. Melt butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat.
7. Dip sandwich halves, top and bottom, in batter.
8. When butter foams, place sandwiches in skillet and fry until golden brown, about 2 minutes
9. Add remaining 2 tablespoons butter to skillet,
Turn sandwiches, and fry for 2 minutes        more.
10. Transfer to plates, sprinkle with confectioners' sugar, and serve with jelly.

To say the least this is a very, very rich sandwich but very good and very tasty.
I really like this sandwich from time to time. If you have not tried one of these sandwiches they take the time to try it.
It’s one of those things you can depend on tasting so good!
