OSSOBUCCO From Two Dollar Bill!

OSSOBUCCO From Two Dollar Bill!

I just finished another book this one was called “Two Dollar Bill” A good book and most of the meals written about in the book was at Elian’s a restaurant in NYC.
According to the protagonist in the book the best meal served at Elian’s is Ossoboco.
I took the time to find out about the origin of this  recipe and now I would like to share it with you.
According to Wikipedia Ossobuco was first attested in the late 19th century. It may have been a farmhouse dish or perhaps was an invention of an osteria, a neighborhood restaurant of Milan.
I should have known it would be Italian!
In case your just getting to know me my background is very, very heavily Italian with the Jewish and Southern influences coming in close behind with just a sprinkling of German to complete the mix . Basically an American mutt and the recipes I share with you in hopes of saving you money reflexes that fact.
This is not the orginal recipe. If I used that one my entire weekly budget would be used on this one dish.
This is the recipe I did come up with and find it works beautifully and yes does stay within our goal of eating well on two dollars a day.

OSSOBUCCO

2 tbsp. oil
2 tbsp. butter, melt
2 beef shanks or small steaks.  (Veal Shanks were orginally used)
1/2 tsp. salt & pepper
2 baby carrots
¼ onion, chopped
1 stalk celery, chopped
Sprinkle with rosemary, thyme, & oregano (all available at the dollar store)
¼ Tsp of garlic (the chopped and jarred version also a dollar store find)
1 /2 c. dry red wine
1 tbsp. tomato paste (sauce if that is whats on hand)
½ c. chicken broth

Directions
Brown meat in oil
 Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
Add vegetables, spices and other ingredients.
 Cover and simmer 2 hours.
Sprinkle with 2 teaspoons lemon peel and 1 tablespoon parsley, 1/2 hour before ready to serve.
 Serve over hot rice.
This is an easy to prepared meal and one that impresses. Inexpensive to serve at home but untouchable if ordered at a restaurant.
Now I am moving onto the next book.
I will see what this book will offer the readers as far as good meals go.
Until then give this one a try.
I think you will enjoy the flavor of this dish.
