"Fastnacht" On Shrove Tuesday/ Fat Tuesday

"Fastnacht" On Shrove Tuesday also known as Fat Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday also known as Fat Tuesday. The name "Fastnacht" is German for "Fast Night." Fastnacht Day is a day to forget about dieting and a slim waistline and feast on doughnuts!
This is a  Lenten tradition in my family that begins on Ash Wednesday, February 25, Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday it is, the day before the start of Lent, and is known as "Fastnacht Day." This day is a celebration and is when these yeast raised potato doughnuts, are  known as a "Fastnachts."
So join me in the Fastnacht Day day and forget about dieting and a slim waistline and feast on doughnuts!
Here is the recipe for these delicious donuts if you want them home made.

FASTNACHTS KARTOFFEL

       GERMAN FASTNACHTS (DROP DONUTS)

Ingredients & instructions:

1 packet of yeast dissolved in

1/2 cup warm water with
1 tsp sugar

1 cup hot, mashed potatoes
1 cup sugar
1 cup water that the potatoes were boiled in (lukewarm)
1 cup all purpose flour

Mix potatoes, sugar, potato water and flour; add yeast dissolved in water. Let rise in a warm place for several hours.

Than add:

1 cup sugar
1 cup lukewarm water or milk
3/4 cup melted butter
3 eggs beaten
1 teaspoon salt
5 cups sifted flour for stiff dough (about)

To eat a Fastnacht  slice it crosswise, as you would slice a bagel. Spread with butter (optional), plus table syrup  Replace the top and ENJOY!

Personally I am taking orders for these donuts and making a trip to
Wegmans and buying them for all my friends.
By the way if you do go to this store refer to them as in the Americanized name of Kekles.
One other not well known fact why I like Wegmans version of this German Donut is that the Wegman family are German Jews and bring their version of this treat from the old country. So if you want the best, most delicious version of this treat this is where you should get them.
All I know my mouth is watering and I can not wait to get them!
