Today was a cooler day here it was only 61 degrees and I though what a good day to use the oven. Not that the temperature ever stopped me before.
I also had a bad headache and wanted to do something easy so I decided to use up my have I had in the freezer and make my version of au gratin scalloped potatoes.
So this is what I did:
While I was peeling the potatoes, chopping the onions and ham I started a rue for a white sauce.
I know that's not the way you learned to make scalloped potatoes. It was either layer the potatoes and sprinkle with flour and cover with milk or just use the boxed scalloped potatoes.
I don't do either. The reason is first I don't like the dried scalloped potatoes and powered mix and I don't like the other way because the scalloped potatoes come out watery. I don't like either and will not waste my time making it this way.
Directions:
For Scalloped Potatoes
1/2 cup chopped ham
3 potatoes sliced
1/2 cup sliced onions
3/4 shredded cheese the type is your choice.
White Sauce
2 tablespoons butter
wondra or flour
1 cup of milk
salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
1. while you are making the meal preheat the oven to 375 degrees
2. Before you start chopping start the rue. That means melt the butter and start adding in the flour until it reached the thickness our want
3. Now chop the ham, slice the potatoes, slice and pull apart the onions, and get the cheese ready to use.
4. by now it will be time to add the milk to the rue and and stir let cook down until the thickness of white sauce you like is reached. I like about the thickness of what I would make for cream of ham.
5. Once the white sauce is ready you can start laying.
First a lawyer of potatoes, a layer of ham, a layer of onions, then a layer of cheese and top with the white sauce. Repeat the layering
6. Now cover the pan with foil and put in the oven for a hour to an hour and a half.
7. I like mine in for an hour I like a little crispness to the vegetables. If you don't then leave in for 1 1/2 hours.
8. Which ever you do take off the foil from the top of the potatoes for the last fifteen minutes
9. Let sit for about 20 mins then serve a side of apple sauce goes great with this meal.
Enjoy!
