Grandma Belding's Red Cabbage Salad

      Grandma Belding's  Red Cabbage Salad

One of the important things for my holiday table is Grandma Belding's red cabbage salad. This has been a tradition in my family way before I was born and made for every holiday an to be honest I love it!
First I had to find the right pickles. That would be Mrs Fannings bread and butter pickles. If you can not find them than get the best brand you can get that  reads on the label old fashioned bread and butter pickles. what makes this important is the way they are canned. I had settled this year but will order mrs. Fanning's pickles online for Christmas.
Mrs Fannings has been around forever I know both sides of my family have used these pickles for almost a hundred years or longer and goes way back to our Kentucky roots so no other pickles will do.
How to make this salad was such a closely guarded secret that grandma didn't even want to share it with me!
So I had to resort to subterfuge to get the recipe. I should have felt guilty doing it but then again if I had not done it the recipe would have died with my grandmother.
In fact it took two years of following my grandmother around the kitchen to finally nail down the recipe. She was perturbed when she figured out that I knew how to make it but grudgingly admitted I did it right the first year I made it for her.
So I grabbed a jar of pickles and came home to make some to enjoy with holiday dinner.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I can tell you my mouth is watering for it right now!
