Today I made my traditional split pea soup with ham for the neighborhood. All the soup deliveries have been made and hopefully they will enjoy the soup today.
It's a simple recipe but the first time I used these split peas in my soup I prefer kosher like Manischewitz. I know it doesn't make sense but that's what I'm used to doing I wasn't sure how it would come out but it . Here is what I did.
The first thing you have to do when you make split pea soup is soaking the peas at least a day in water and I add wine.
I do it twice. I use a little wine at this time because I want the peas infused with the wine it adds such a nice flavor. Yes there's wine even in the soup. I blame it on my French and Italian influences. We all have our excuses built in. Lol
I do this twice before I make the soup and here is the the recipe for the soup:
Ingredients:
1 bag split peas
1 32 oz box of chicken broth
2 potatoes peeled and diced
1 sweet potato peeled and diced
1 onion peeled and diced
2 Carrote peeled and diced
1 large ham bone
1/2 cup of white wine
Directions:
Combine all ingredients in crock pot and cook on low for 12 hours
Remove from crock pot
Add some cream and serve
I hope you enjoy your soup and this is just the beginning of a wonderful new year.
